A big, ugly, yellow dog with no tail and a chewed-off ear, the biggest thief in the area, attaches himself to the Coates family in Texas after the Civil War. Time and again he helps the boys, Travis and Little Arliss, in their encounters with not-so-tame domestic animals-wild bulls and wild hogs and with bears and wolves.
